The opening of the Met's Costume Institute exhibit through the Superfine: Tailoring Black Style set the vibes of the event, alluding to a style that was elegant then and is a concrete example of heritage-inspired glamour now. It was the “Tailored for You” dress code from the exhibit that mainly focused on menswear, the Lady Gaga-led celebrities who took to the venue with fresh looks that were both in line with the fine cuts and Black style heritage ahead of our heritage. The red carpet became the runway of the world where people wrapped themselves in fashion, from vintage-inspired headgear to the most apropos of all types of suits such as the power-suit ones.
Gratitude to Tradition
Several of those who attended the show were very happy about the hat come-back and started to regard it as a statement accessory. Whoopi Goldberg combined tradition with innovation in a black-and-white Thom Browne suit along with a veiled top hat; Lupita Nyong'o, on the other hand, gave a fresh vibe to her mint Chanel suit with a small white bear hat. Tracee Ellis Ross, TV star, chose a simple felt trilby, and Bad Bunny opted for a crazy brown Prada headpiece - proof that the headgear trend of the 1920s was still on in the show. These accessories, noticeable at a glance, made each appearance an outstanding picture, connecting the realms of old with new in a nice way!
A Queen Returns
Diana Ross, the iconic singer, achieved a remarkable return to the Met Gala in a stunning and heart-winning way. Her dress, enveloped in shining white color and covered with rhinestones, a gigantic hat adorned with feathers and a regal cape, were so enormous her staff allegedly needed the help of eight of their colleagues to get the outfit upstairs. The outfit she chose, as a true symbol of Diana, was a perfect representation of her personality: she stated that the white velvet cape was being our replied with the names of her children and eight grandchildren. “The cape has the names of all my children and eight grandchildren – everyone’s names are embroidered in that,” Ross told a live stream. Through the combination of the sparkling train and the family-themed motif, Ms. Ross created a look that was truly splendid and the center of everyone's attention.
Staying in Character: Sarah Snook
Australian actress Sarah Snook embraced sharp tailoring to channel her inner powerhouse. Snook wore a structured black frock coat with heavily padded shoulders and glittering brooches, paired with wide-leg trousers whose red velvet lining spilled out with each step. The dramatic collar and jewelry added a touch of old-world opulence – a stark contrast to the neutral blazers of her Succession character Shiv Roy. This polished ensemble was a modern spin on vintage menswear-inspired dressing, proof that Snook stays “in character” even on the Met carpet.
Old Hollywood Reimagined: Sydney Sweeney
Rising star Sydney Sweeney paid tribute to silver-screen glamour in a sleek black gown by Miu Miu. The form-fitting dress was studded with sequins and featured a bold circular cut-out at the chest with cascading fringe, clearly inspired by 1950s style icon Kim Novak. Sweeney even shared a vintage shot of Novak in a nearly identical gown on social media before the gala – a wink to her muse. With an elegant updo and sparkling earrings, Sweeney’s look blended modern sexiness with a touch of Old Hollywood allure, proving a classic aesthetic still dazzles on the red carpet.
Twinning in Tailoring: The Murdochs
Media power couple Wendi Murdoch and her daughter Grace channeled the theme through synchronized suiting. The pair arrived in matching grey Thom Browne tailored jackets and trousers, buttoned-up from collar to cuff. It was a rare mother-daughter style moment on the Met carpet: Wendi (a former co-chair) and Grace both proved that the power suit can be a family heirloom. Their coordinated look showed how the “tailored” dress code could double as a bonding statement – tailoring that truly ran in the family.
Rihanna Radiates Tailored Chic
Met Gala co-chair Rihanna once again demonstrated her red-carpet prowess, even in the rain. The expectant superstar arrived solo under an umbrella in a sleek grey two-piece suit paired with sparkling heels. The ensemble was impeccably tailored to skim her baby bump, striking the perfect balance between edgy and elegant. As always, Rihanna made “tailored” look effortless: she proved a suit can be just as eye-catching as a gown, especially when worn by the world’s most acclaimed style icon.
Tailored Royalty: The Co-Chairs
The Met’s co-chairs set the standard for sophisticated suiting. Vogue’s Anna Wintour appeared in an ivory Louis Vuitton dress layered under a powder-blue coat, while race-car champ Lewis Hamilton took a cue from menswear in a cream Louis Vuitton tuxedo with a cropped jacket and matching beret. Their fellow co-chair Colman Domingo put a twist on tradition: he wore a metallic Valentino suit topped with a royal blue cape and pearl-encrusted collar as a direct homage to the late style legend AndrĂ© Leon Talley. Together, Wintour, Hamilton and Domingo blended classic tailoring with personal flourishes – from an edited Vivienne Westwood vibe (the pastel coat) to high-octane F1 flair (the cropped tuxedo) to a grand salute to Black fashion history in Domingo’s cape.
A Tupac-Inspired Tailoring Tour de Force
Singer and actress Teyana Taylor turned the “Tailored for You” theme into a full-on performance. She wore a custom deep-red Marc Jacobs suit, designed in collaboration with Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter, that mixed sharp tailoring with hip-hop iconography. A three-piece pinstripe suit was topped by an opulent velvet cape and finished with a feathered cap and durag – combining masculine and feminine elements in one regal ensemble. The cape’s long train was embroidered with the words “Harlem Rose” and the lyric “A rose out of the concrete,” clear references to Tupac Shakur’s poem “The Rose That Grew From Concrete.” Taylor’s look was a literal tribute to Black cultural heritage and menswear: every element, from the durag to the tailoring, underscored the theme’s celebration of Black style.
Golden Girl: Gigi Hadid
Supermodel Gigi Hadid channeled Hollywood royalty in a glittering gold gown. The sparkly dress caught every flashbulb as she posed solo on the blue carpet. Without her rumored date in tow, Hadid’s luminous ensemble – simple in cut but richly textured – was all the statement she needed. In her shimmering solo debut of the night, Gigi proved that sometimes bold color and shine are the best accessories to a perfectly tailored silhouette.
All in all, the 2025 Met Gala was a vivid showcase of custom craftsmanship and cultural resonance. With a focus on Black designers and menswear, the gala’s red carpet felt both historic and forward-looking. Attendees interpreted “Tailored for You” in myriad ways: Diana Ross’s personal cape, the Murdochs’ twin suits, Hamilton’s cropped jacket and Teyana’s Tupac homage all wove a narrative of fashion as identity. It was a night where each sew and seam told a story – weaving together couture technique, personal history and collective heritage in one unforgettable evening of style.
